BIOGRAPHY

Ädu Alexandre Gindy was born in Pärnu, Estonia, and following six years in post-war relocation

camps in Germany, emigrated with her mother to the United States in 1950. Adu earned her B.A.

from Vassar, her M.A.T. from Columbia Teacher's College (Columbia University), and also attended

classes at the Art Students League in New York City, The Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan,

Connecticut, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine, prior to

earning an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1989.

Her work is in museum collections in Sweden, Cuba and throughout the Upper Midwest region's art centers. She has gallery affiliations in Chicago, Duluth and the Twin Cities.

Adu taught in the Art and Design Department at the University of Minnesota, Duluth until her recent retirement. She now lives in Minneapolis and Hayward, Wisconsin with her husband. Adu paints from her studio in The California Building, which is located in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Spontaneous gesture plays an important role in the initial stages of my works. I like the idea of coaxing a figure or its quasi-facsimile from the interplay of marks, lines, shapes and color—grasp it as I emerges from the general abstraction. Painting in the manner keeps me in touch with my own innocent eye and my inner self.

Though I create images after my own desires, all of my images aren’t gesturally conceived. I have, and probably always will, borrow freely from a wide repertoire of cultural icons; for example: Egyptian, Mexican, Africa, and others.
